What IP64 means
The IP code IP64 is part of the IEC 60529 standard for ingress protection. The first characteristic numeral, 6, indicates the level of protection against solid objects and access to hazardous parts. The second numeral, 4, indicates the level of protection against the ingress of water. Together, these digits describe exactly what an enclosure rated IP64 can withstand.
For solid protection, the digit 6 means the enclosure is dust-tight. Protected against access to hazardous parts with a wire. No ingress of dust whatsoever. The test method is dust chamber (talcum powder) for 8 hours (2 hours if equipment is in operation) with enclosure under reduced internal pressure; no dust ingress permitted.
For liquid protection, the digit 4 means the enclosure resists splashing water (all directions). Protection against splashing water. Water splashed against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects. The test procedure is oscillating tube swinging 180° with 0.4 l/min per hole; enclosure on turntable; 5 minutes minimum.
IP64 vs IP65: IP65 resists directed water jets; IP64 only resists splashing. IP64 vs IP54: IP64 is fully dust-tight vs dust-protected. When specifying IP64 for a project, confirm the rating certificate from the manufacturer and consider that seals degrade over time with temperature cycling, UV exposure, and chemical contact.
