An IP (Ingress Protection) rating, defined by the international standard IEC 60529, classifies the degree of protection an enclosure provides against the ingress of solid objects and water. The code is written as the letters 'IP' followed by two digits, and sometimes an additional letter.
The first digit indicates protection against solid objects and access to hazardous parts, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 6 (dust-tight). The second digit indicates protection against water, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 9K (high-pressure, high-temperature water jets).
When a digit is replaced with 'X', it means that specific protection was not tested or specified—not that there is no protection. For example, IPX7 means water-immersion protection is certified while solid protection is unspecified.
Choosing the correct IP rating depends on the environment. Indoor consumer electronics often use IP20 or IP40. Outdoor-covered fixtures typically require IP44. Fully exposed outdoor equipment generally needs IP65 or IP66. Submersible devices require IP67 or IP68. Food-processing washdown zones demand IP69K.
Remember that an IP rating is measured under controlled laboratory conditions. Real-world durability depends on seal wear, temperature cycling, chemical exposure, and maintenance. Always confirm the manufacturer's specific rating certificate for critical applications.
