Understanding IP69K: The Washdown Standard Explained
Why food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries rely on IP69K for high-pressure, high-temperature cleaning.
IP69K is the highest rating in the IEC 60529 system, certifying protection against high-pressure (8–10 MPa) and high-temperature (80 °C) water jets from close range.
The test uses a fan-shaped nozzle spraying 14–16 L/min at 100–150 mm distance, hitting the enclosure at 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° for 30 seconds each. No harmful water ingress may occur.
This rating originated in the German DIN 40050-9 standard for road vehicles and is now essential in food, beverage, dairy, and pharmaceutical processing where stringent hygiene and frequent washdown are required.
It is important to note that IP69K certifies jet resistance, not immersion. A device rated IP69K alone may not survive submersion. For full coverage, look for dual ratings such as IP69K/IP67.
When selecting IP69K equipment, also consider material compatibility: 316 stainless steel, PTFE seals, and food-grade gaskets are typically required to withstand both the cleaning chemicals and the heat.
