What IP30 means
The IP code IP30 is part of the IEC 60529 standard for ingress protection. The first characteristic numeral, 3, indicates the level of protection against solid objects and access to hazardous parts. The second numeral, 0, indicates the level of protection against the ingress of water. Together, these digits describe exactly what an enclosure rated IP30 can withstand.
For solid protection, the digit 3 means the enclosure is > 2.5 mm — tool / wire. Protected against access to hazardous parts with a tool. Protected against solid foreign objects of 2.5 mm diameter and greater. The test method is access probe (2.5 mm rigid test wire) shall not penetrate with adequate clearance.
For liquid protection, the digit 0 means the enclosure resists no protection. No special protection against the ingress of water. The test procedure is no test required.
IP30 vs IP40: IP40 blocks smaller 1 mm objects. IP30 vs IP33: IP33 adds spraying-water resistance. When specifying IP30 for a project, confirm the rating certificate from the manufacturer and consider that seals degrade over time with temperature cycling, UV exposure, and chemical contact.
